HOW WILL I KNOW IF MY AREA CODE IS CHANGING?
Indianapolis and portions of Boone, Hamilton, Madison, Hancock, Shelby,
Johnson, Morgan and Hendricks counties will keep the 317 area code. The
remaining area shown on the map above will now be served by the 765 code.
Look at the prefix list to see if the first three numbers of your telephone number
(the prefix) fall under the 765 heading.
WHY?
In addition to the millions of household and business telephone numbers
in service already, cellular phones, computer modems, pagers and fax
machines all require their own numbers.
As a result, we are literally running out of telephone numbers. To meet
this exploding demand, the new 765 are code has been assigned to the
central Indiana area. (See prefix lists and map.)
WHEN?
The 765 area code went into effect February 1, 1997. However, through
June 28, 1997, you may reach the new area code by dialing 317 or 765.
Beginning with June 28, 1997, you will be required to use the correct area code
when dialing outside your own area code.
HERE'S HOW TO PLACE CALLS WITH THE NEW AREA CODE.
- To place a local call into another area code, you should
DIAL THE AREA CODE + THE SEVEN-DIGIT NUMBER.
- Within the same area code, local calls can be completed by dialing
the seven-digit telephone number.
- When calling long distance into another area code, you should
DIAL 1 + AREA CODE + THE SEVEN-DIGIT NUMBER.
